Cataract Surgery Q&A

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove cloudy eye lenses and replace them with clear artificial lenses. Cataracts are common, occurring in over 24 million adults over 40. By the age of 75, more than 50% of adults develop cataracts.

Cataracts can obscure your vision, casting a haze over everything you see. The most advanced cataracts can cause blindness. Fortunately, cataract surgery can restore your eyesight safely.

Dr. Kamen also performs clear lens extraction surgery for people without cataracts. This surgery is the same as cataract surgery in terms of replacing your eye lens. However, with clear lens extraction, the main goal is permanent vision correction.

What is the process for cataract surgery?

At Beverly Hills Eye Center, Dr. Kamen uses a highly advanced approach to cataract surgery. He administers local anesthesia (numbing eye drops) and creates a small incision to access your eye lens.

Then, Dr. Kamen uses a laser or ultrasound energy to break up and remove your cloudy lens. He places an intraocular lens in its place. The intraocular lens restores your eyesight. It essentially replaces glasses or contact lenses. With laser cataract surgery, more than half of the surgery is done by the computer and is more precise.

Dr. Kamen uses a no-stitch method of cataract surgery, and the whole process takes only 10-15 minutes. Cataract surgery has a success rate of over 98%, and Dr. Kamen has successfully performed more than 20,000 eye surgeries in his career.

What are the different choices in intraocular lenses for cataract surgery?

Beverly Hills Eye Center offers the most advanced intraocular lenses to correct your vision problems. The latest multifocal lenses can correct multiple vision problems, such as nearsightedness and presbyopia, at the same time. In addition, toric multifocal lenses can correct astigmatism.

Some of the different state-of-the-art lenses available at Beverly Hills Eye Center include:

  • TECNIS Symfony™®
  • TECNIS Synergy™®
  • Alcon ReSTOR®
  • Bausch + Lomb Crystalens® Advanced Optics (AO)
  • Alcon PanOptix®

Dr. Kamen can assess your vision correction needs and recommend an intraocular lens that allows you to live without glasses or contacts following your cataract surgery.
